The overall number of Americans diagnosed with diabetes doubles.
From 1996 to 2007, the number of Americans with diabetes has nearly doubled across all age groups, according to a report just released by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.1 In fact, diabetes now affects more than 19 million Americans. And over 95 percent of all diabetes cases are type 2, which is often linked to obesity.2
The costs associated with treating diabetes and its complications also doubled during this timeframe.2 Worse still, average medical expenses are 2.3 times higher for diabetics than for Americans who don't have this condition (after adjusting for population, age and gender differences).3
People with pre-diabetes-those whose blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be "diabetic"-are also of concern. Not only are they at risk for developing diabetes, they're at risk for other serious health problems. For example, pre-diabetics are more than twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease as compared to those with normal blood glucose levels).4
Early detection of type 2 diabetes is more critical than ever to manage your exposure to costly chronic conditions.
The MIB Checking Service provides two early-warning indicators for medical conditions that may be precursors of diabetes. First, we can flag those with pre-diabetes with our report on Hemoglobin A1c-a test found to be more sensitive to pre-diabetes than blood glucose tests. Second, we can help accurately identify obesity. Unlike prescription-based profiles, we report an applicant's verified height and weight from paramedical exams. These are just two examples of critical information only the MIB Checking Service can provide.
