New study finds hospitalizations for stroke are increasing sharply among younger adults.2

Center for Disease Control researchers reviewed hospitalization data from 1994 to 2007 from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample, which identified patients with a primary diagnosis of ischemic stroke.1

The statistics are surprising. Among males from 15 to 34 years old, the rate of stroke increased more than 50%; females in the same age group had an increased incidence of 17%. For males 35 to 44 years of age, the study found a 47% increase and for females, a 36% increase in stroke incidence.2

According to the American Stroke Association, some stroke risk factors are hereditary; some are a function of natural processes (such as aging). However, there are many risk factors such as smoking, diabetes mellitus, poor diet and obesity that can increase the risk of stroke.

MIB can help insurers reveal potential risk factors.

MIB can help insurers more accurately identify height and weight, pre-diabetes and diabetes, high blood pressure and even tobacco use. Unlike prescription-based profiles, our Checking Service can more accurately identify conditions such as obesity, by revealing an applicant's true height and weight from paramedical exams. We can also flag those with pre-diabetes through reports on Hemoglobin A1c test results, which underwriters cite as more sensitive than blood glucose tests for early detection.
