U.S. application activity for individually underwritten life insurance increased +1.6% in October year-over-year, all ages combined, according to the MIB Life Index. October's rise took place in a month with one fewer business day than its October 2010 counterpart. October's application activity was +8.3% higher than that of September. "At a time when the U.S. economy is struggling to define direction, the pipeline for new life insurance business appears to be holding its own," states Lee Oliphant, MIB's CEO. More Actuarial and Statistical Research Capabilities

MIB Life Index Reports U.S. Life Insurance Activity Off 3.4% in September

After three consecutive months of expansion, U.S. application activity for individually underwritten life insurance fell by-3.4% in September, year-over-year, all ages combined according to the MIB Life Index. The drop marked this year's largest percent decline and all but erased June through August gains which were unseasonal for this summer period. Year-to-date (YTD), the Index is off -0.6%, back to pre-June levels, compared to the same nine months last year. September's application activity was +5.2% higher than that of August, though well off the +9-10% pace typically seen for this time period. Third quarter performance (Q3 2011/2010) was relatively flat, off -0.3%, but much improved when compared to Q3's 2010/2009 -2.6% decline. More Actuarial and Statistical Research Capabilities

MIB Life Index Reports U.S. Life Insurance Activity up 0.7% in August

U.S. application activity for individually underwritten life insurance increased +0.7% in August year-over-year, all ages combined, according to the MIB Life Index. Seasonal summer declines and a struggling economy notwithstanding, the Life Index has made modest gains for the past three consecutive months, up +0.1%, +2.1%, and +0.7% year-over-year - June, July and August, respectively. June and July 2011 increases were compared to some of 2010's sharpest declines (-4% range); August's increase was compared against a -1.8% year-over-year decline for August 2010. August application volumes gained +1.0% as compared to July, consistent for this time period. With five of the last eight months showing gains, the MIB Life Index is close to parity, off -0.2% year-to-date (YTD). More Actuarial and Statistical Research Capabilities

MIB Life Index Reports U.S. Life Insurance Activity up 2.1% in July

U.S. application activity for individually underwritten life insurance was up +2.1% in July year-over-year, all ages combined, according to the MIB Life Index. July's percentage upswing is unprecedented for this month and is largely a reflection of a significantly low index value for the July 2010 comparative period - in percentage terms, last year's July Index (2010/2009) was off -3.9%, year-over-year. With four of the last seven months of 2011 finishing in positive territory, the MIB Life Index is holding its own year-to-date at -0.3%. More Actuarial and Statistical Research Capabilities

MIB Life Index Reports U.S. Life Insurance Activity Up Slightly in March

U.S. application activity for individually underwritten life insurance was up slightly in March, +0.6% year-over-year all ages combined, according to the MIB Life Index. The modest uptick is more earnest than at first glance, given its year-over-year juxtaposition against the +2.4% percent increase for March 2010. Prior to 2010, the U.S. Life Index for March has invariably lost ground in each of the last five consecutive years. At the close of the first quarter (Q1) year-to-date activity is off -1.0% compared to Q1 2010 (the last quarter of recovery as noted by the Index after recessionary levels in 2008/2009). March 2011 application activity was up +1.1% over February 2011 activity. More Actuarial and Statistical Research Capabilities

Year-to-date, the MIB Life Index is off -1.9%. February saw a +10.3% increase in application activity from January levels, in what is a typical growth pattern for this time period. More Actuarial and Statistical Research Capabilities
